The inspiration we drew from our visit to MOCA, will allow us to work in group activities where we will document our response to the work we viewed in performance art back in the classroom. “Under the Big Black Sun” exposed art students to powerful depictions of universal human themes, and led to thoughtful discussion between peers. Students who visited the museum participated in group tours guided by MOCA educators who encouraged us to explore each artwork on a deep and interactive level, building upon the ideas of our peers as we investigated the nuances of every piece we saw. Educators will tailor each tour and activity to the. MOCA’s exhibition demonstrates how contemporary Los Angeles artists have manipulated a wide variety of media to portray strong messages, both fiercely political and deeply personal. Included in a regional art collaboration called “Pacific Standard Time,” PST is an unprecedented collaboration of cultural institutions across Southern California coming together to celebrate the birth of the L.A. Sponsored by Sony Pictures Entertainment, AVPA Art students participated in a field-trip as part of The Museum of Contemporary Art’s Education outreach program called, Contemporary Art Start to The Geffen Contemporary, where the exhibition, “Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974-1981” is on display.
